There’s something special about gathering around a beautifully styled dining table. Whether it’s a casual weekday dinner, a weekend brunch with friends, or a festive celebration, the way a table is presented can completely transform the atmosphere of a meal. In this week’s Style Note, we will explore simple and creative ways to style your dining table for any occasion. From choosing the right linens and centrepieces to arranging place settings and adding those small finishing touches, you will find practical ideas that help you turn an everyday table into something memorable.
The everyday table: making daily meals feel considered
Even a weekday breakfast can be a considered moment in the day, if we take a little time. A beautifully styled table is not just about adding decorations, it is about the little rituals - setting out a ceramic jug for the milk and a vintage style glass butterdish - pieces that offer visually appealing and tactile experience that will make mealtimes more graceful, less hurried. And, while not every day calls for a tablecloth, mark each place setting with a table mat - opt for woven rattan placemats which will easily brush clean for daily use. Then, simple dinnerware and matching glass tumblers will provide cohesion. Lay things out the night before to streamline your mornings.
Choosing your foundation: cloth, runner, or bare wood
When it comes to laying the table for more formal or special occasions, the first step is the base layer. A tablecloth will always look sophisticated - choose your cloth according to the event and the season. A white linen tablecloth is timeless, but for springtime, a cotton floral block print table cloth is refreshing and apt for the Easter table, or for a more relaxed look, a striped cotton tablecloth or gingham cloth will add energy. A beautiful wooden dining table, whether antique or contemporary brings a character and elegance of its own, in which case a table runner is a good compromise giving your dining room styling a dressed look, especially when matched with fabric placemats for a considered look that will also protect a wooden table from heat.
Crockery and glassware: building a flexible collection
The crockery and glassware you use will set the tone for your entire table. For special occasions it can be desirable to have a full range of matching dinnerware. White china sets like our Abrey Dinnerware are classic, but coloured earthenware plates can still look elegant, especially when paired with crystal glassware in more refined shapes. If grand occasions are few and far between, choose smaller four- or six-person dinner sets that complement each other for more flexible table styling. A colourful mix and match of serving dishes and quirky dinnerware sets can be fun and celebratory too. Choose coloured glassware, like our Confetti Glasses, for additional pops of colour.
Candles and centrepieces
No celebratory occasion is complete without some form of table centre. The best arrangement for round dining tables is a circular centrepiece - this could take the form of a vase filled with seasonal flowers or faux stems, which will have a much longer lifespan. If the arrangement is dense, keep the height below eye level to aid the flow of communication around the table. For long rectangular dining tables, garlands that run down the centre are effective, or use smaller bud vases arranged at intervals. You could even add a small posy of flowers at each place setting.
Although our table arrangement ideas for Christmas look very different from our Easter tablescapes, we know everything looks better by candlelight, especially at lunchtime on shorter days when the shadows lengthen early. Dinner candles in tall candleholders are a space-saving way to introduce height to your table styling, or use tealight holders dotted around the dining table for an atmospheric glow. Use LED candles and tealights for extra peace of mind.
Setting the table for guests
When setting the table for guests, ensure each seat around the table looks neat and balanced, to create a welcoming space where people feel comfortable, relaxed and excited to sit down together.
A typical place setting should include:
- Dinner plate and placemat if using at the centre
- Side plate top left
- Forks on the left
- Knives and spoon on the right
- Glasses should sit above the knife
For casual meals, you can of course simplify how you dress a dining room table. You might present the cutlery on top of your napkins or have them in a central pot or basket for people to help themselves to. Choose well-balanced cutlery that feels good in the hand. Well-polished metallic styles always glow beautifully in candle or sunlight, adding a more luxurious feel to any occasion. Napkins in more formal settings are usually placed to the left of the forks, but they can be laid on the plate or just above as the part of the tablescape design. Just make sure they can be reached easily without disrupting the place setting.
Seasonal table styling
For a beautifully decorated Easter table, flowers are the perfect centrepiece. Save the last minute fuss by preparing an elegant faux flower arrangement in advance that will last the entire weekend.
Even when using faux stems, try and match the bloom to the season for authenticity - nature has an uncanny way of providing a palette that captures the mood.
It wouldn't be Easter without eggs, and decorated hanging eggs always look effective on branches supported in a heavy based vase. They also make lovely decorations for a dining room table - scatter them around the table, or nestle them in the folds of your napkins.
Choose table linen that matches the freshness of the season in cheerful greens and blues with smatterings of yellow, or opt for a floral embroidered table cloth and matching napkins for a daintier look.
