Having kids that share a bedroom can be a fun experience, especially when they feel as though they can express themselves and explore their personalities individually, as well as together. In this Style Note, we share a few of our favourite ways to zone kids' bedroom and decorate them with kids’ room décor and space-enhancing children’s bedroom furniture such as clever pull-out beds. So, gather your little ones around and prepare for some creative collaboration.
Create a kids’ room divider
Without a physical wall to help your little ones feel like individuals, you can always turn to paint. An institutional line is a bold block colour painted half to three quarters of the way up or down a wall and can be a wonderful solution when sharers disagree on colour schemes. Alternatively, paint a mural or feature wall for each child to mark out their space – this means you don’t have to paint a whole wall and it can be a fun activity for adults and children alike.
“I really like to paint an institutional line because it allows you to be brave with your colour choice - but you can balance it out with a lighter, neutral shade.”

Consider space saving beds
Beds with plenty of space underneath, built-in drawers or even pull-out hideaway beds will help you make the most of your kids’ shared bedroom. An extendable day bed with raised edges on three sides has a cosy, den-like feel, and with a wide storage drawer and pull-out slatted base onto which a second mattress can be placed, it’s also a handy sleepover solution. If your bedframes don’t need updating, a secret sleeper drawer will suit a variety of frames and means there’s no need to compromise on style when looking for extra storage or sleeping arrangements.
Make sure there is plenty of bedroom storage
It’s important for children to own their own space when sharing a room, which can be tricky when you’re looking for a scheme that gels. Choose fun and creative bedroom storage solutions for each child, choose storage baskets that complement one another but are different enough to belong to each child. The more playful the receptacle, the more fun tidying will be for everyone involved – you could even turn it into a game. Alternatively, if your kids prefer to have their possessions on display, they can each take a shelf to style (and keep tidy!) on a bookcase.

Finish with fun kids' room décor
No matter what your kids are into, they’ll want to see their passions reflected around them in their room décor. Wall art such as a fun animal head, or some subtle multi-coloured dots or golden stars wall stickers are great for quickly decorating plain walls and can be taken down easily, allowing your little ones to change their room décor as often as they change their interests. Hanging a memo board or laying a fun rug that everyone enjoys hanging out on are also wonderful ways to encourage creativity from all room residents.
