Create a cosy winter balcony with SHNordic

Over the past couple of years, having our own outdoor space has taken on a new significance; we have come to view it not just as a place to soak up the summer sun with a glass of wine, but also as an extension of our living space and a connection to the outside world. We want to encourage everyone to get out there and make use of their gardens all year round, including those with smaller spaces such as balconies. So, we teamed up with @SHNordic to provide us with some cosy balcony inspiration for the colder months.

Use warm lighting to make the balcony cosy

Firepits are an excellent way to quickly transform a cold, dark garden into one filled with light and warmth. However, we realise they aren’t always the safe or practical choice, especially when the area in question is a small balcony. Instead, light a few candles or have a rechargeable lantern or two handy so you can recreate that cosy glow, then bring your favourite blankets outside to keep you toasty.

For space-saving on the balcony, bring indoor furniture outside

If you’re not quite ready to set up your warm-weather furniture outside, utilise your indoor furniture for now, and take an occasional chair from inside, out. Have the chair close at hand so that it can easily be moved outside on a bright winter day or clear winter evening, then bring it back inside when you’re done. This will make your balcony feel even more like a snug extension of your living space.

Decorate with house plants and dried flowers

‌Whether you live in an urban area or your balcony is surrounded by trees, bringing house plants and vases of dried flowers and grasses that would usually live inside to your outside space for a few hours will instantly transform your balcony into a cosy retreat. Overall, we think this occasional approach to making use of small outdoor spaces all year round is a brilliantly versatile solution, and one that is well suited to the new ways we have come to live in and enjoy our homes.
