Inspired by the bijou haven of Catherine Kenna’s beautiful walled garden, featured in “25 beautiful homes”, we share tips and tricks to make the most of the patio this summer. Catherine’s outdoor room comes blessed with mature gardens on both sides, but even without the greeny canopy, by using many of her styling choices, you can create and enjoy your very own patio haven at home.
How can I make my patio look nice?
It is more important to think about zoning the patio using outdoor furniture and accessories because they are usually quite compact outdoor spaces. Think about how you want to use the space; whether you want to dine outside, or simply relax. If you want to dine outside, a bistro set or folding occasional table is a good choice - but you don’t need to shy away from larger outdoor furniture if you just want to relax together on the patio.
A corner lounge set that runs the edge of the space utilises the patio well, putting all the available space to good use; often, when furniture is in the centre, all the valuable space in the corners disappears. Statement hanging chairs need not be off the menu either - they're a great choice for small spaces because you have an instant zone for relaxing to make the patio more usable - and one that doesn't take up floor space.
What should I put on my patio?
It is important to connect the patio to the house to extend the feel of the space, and you can do this effectively by carrying your inside comfort and style out. With this in mind, employ all the interior design tricks you use inside the home. Use plant stands and hanging planters to decorate at a height where the space is less limited. Hang light-reflecting outdoor mirrors on walls and fences and soften the edges with plants. By hiding the parameters of the patio, you don’t feel constricted by them. Keep the area free of clutter and place clever storage for outdoor bits inside - near the door – the Two Enamelled Storage Tables are great for spare shoes and toys for outdoor days.
How do I make my patio feel cosy?
A hanging chair or a cocoon chair is a good option if you want to feel cosy on the patio because they come with a built-in canopy roof; an all-in-one private lounge zone where you can switch off from the world. Fill your seating area with outdoor soft furnishings and border it with outdoor decorative lights, planters and scented blooms and consider a small wall-mounted water feature to connect with all senses and amplify the cosy mood.
How can I make my patio look special for entertaining?
Think about compact side tables when hosting on the patio because you’ll need, like any large garden, places for guests to rest their drinks and their belongings. Consider stackable outdoor chairs and nesting outdoor side tables. To make the space inviting include plenty of outdoor soft furnishings – an indoor-outdoor beanbag is a good investment when you have extra guests over. Then it's all about atmosphere, with outdoor lighting - hang festoons above your patio (see our article “How to light up your garden at night” for hints and tips for illuminating small spaces.
